I Will Survive… is there an app for that? – “Survival Kits” for Life’s Adventures

Young Man surprising woman with gift for Valentine's dayIt's not every day you need a survival kit, but there are times in life you could really, really use one. You'd even pay big money for a life manual! First year of marriage, anyone? What about the first months as a new parent?

While you can't write a life manual ““ and no, there isn't an app for it either ““ you can share some laughs and some wisdom through a fun, and helpful, “survival kit” for that bride-to-be or expectant mother. Not only are they inspiring and useful, survival kits aren't expensive to put together. Scour dollar stores, use coupons, and get creative with it. Personalization is key. We've got some ideas to give you a jump-start”¦

Idea #1: Wedding Day Survival Kit for the Bride-to-be

Get a box (about a shoe sized one) with a snap-on lid. Decorate the top with the bride's favorite things and a label “Wedding Survival Kit for (Bride's Name)” to add a personal touch. (Consider a groom's one, too. Alter the items to fit the things he'll need on his big day.)

Fill with inexpensive, but useful items. Attach a note to the gift, explaining the items to add laughter, tears, and make a memory. Suggested items include:

Notebook and Pen: Take a few moments to write. When you read it later in life, it will remind you of exactly how you feel right now. And trust us, you will need to draw deep from that well some days!

Beef Jerky and Hard Candy: In case you forget to eat, and start feeling light headed. We don't need a faint bride down the aisle.

Bandages: You never know when a blister will creep up. It's a known fact that feet hate wedding shoes.

Clear Nail Polish: Those panty hose don't run themselves.

Sewing Kit and Safety Pins: You just never know when you'll need it. And if all else fails, just pin it!

Make-up Remover Wipes: In case you look in the mirror and realize the heat (or the emotion) has moved your eyeliner to your chin.

Hand Sanitizer: Well, you'll be joining hands with (groom's name), need we say more?

Nail Clippers, File and Remover: Just in case there is a chip that needs mending.

Small Bottle of Mouth Wash and Lip Balm: A girl needs soft lips and fresh breath for that first kiss as a husband and wife.

Stain Remover Pen: In case you spill”¦anything”¦on that gorgeous dress.

Acid Reducer (like Tums): In case nerves (or breakfast) come to haunt you.

Pain Reliever: In case (groom's name) comes back to haunt you!

Wet Wipes: Something sticky is bound to find you. It's practically the Murphy's Law of formal wear.

Tissues: Because we will all be crying as we welcome you into the family. And no lady wants to look teary eyed when she smiles.

Idea #2: New Baby Survival Kit

Just like the Wedding Box, get a shoe box sized box, complete with snap-on lid. Decorate the top and add a label to personalize. You could do a baby theme, or pick things that are meaningful to the new parent. Below are suggestions for a new Mom, but don't forget that new Dad!

Tissues: No matter how hard labor was, the intense love you have will eventually overwhelm you. Trust us.

Notebook and Pen: Take time to write down the things you're thinking and feeling. You think you'll always remember, but over time, memories do fade. And this is stuff you won't want to forget.

Peaceful, Calming Spray Scent (linen spray, body spray, lotion): You'll need it when it's 1 a.m. “¦ 3 a.m. “¦ 6 a.m. “¦ 9 a.m.”¦

Pain Reliever (that's okay with the doctor): You may have left the hospital, but the pain probably followed you home.

Nail Polish, Clippers, File, and Remover: If you can stomach the smell, there's nothing like a little polish to feel more like yourself again.

Small Hairbrush and Dry Shampoo/Hair Refresher: Let's face it ““ some days, climbing a mountain will seem easier having enough “me” time in the bathroom.

Beef Jerky, Candy, Salty Snacks: Because the exact same moment the baby finally falls asleep on your lap, is the moment you'll realize you're starving. It's pretty much the Murphy's Law of babies.

Small Bottle of Mouth Wash: Some mornings, well”¦ thoroughly brushing your teeth just might not happen. A quick swish is better than nothing!

Extra Wipes: Yes, you'll have a lot of them for baby, but these are for mom. Because what goes in baby doesn't always stay in baby. Enough said.

Hand Lotion: You'll become painfully aware of how rough your skin is once you touch that soft, baby perfection.

A small Bible or Inspirational Book: Drawing on wisdom and love will center you as you brave this new adventure. And we'll be here for you, too.

These are just two ideas for helpful, heartwarming, kits. There are so many adventures in life, and ways to personalize, the ideas are practically endless. Extended time away from home; special day(s), tests, and exams; new home; new car; new job, even heartbreak”¦ What life adventure would you love to make easier?
