What do you have to protect your home when you’re not around? The sad truth is that break-ins and theft seem to always be on the rise, even in “nice” neighborhoods. If you’re away on a regular basis, or are planning an extended getaway, you might be thinking about a home security system. But adding another thing to your budget isn’t in the budget. The good news is, the answer is YES! There are DIY-style home security systems that only require a (relatively) small up-front investment, some without ongoing monthly payments for monitoring, others with modest monthly fees for alerts to motion, or for the ability to control the system remotely.
DIY home security doesn’t mean that you have to sit and watch your house on a video screen, but it does mean that you can record what goes on – and you can check in anytime. Besides the lower price over the standard home monitoring choices, the best parts about installing and maintaining your own home security system are many: being able to check in when you want to; having the ability to choose how you want the system to look ascetically; controlling the price you want (or are able) to pay for home security; not having a stranger all over your house, to locate the “vulnerable” places; being able to immediately contact the authorities and help yourself if you get an intrusion alert; and not needing to hard-wire anything into your home, as most DIY home security systems are wireless.
