Like a friend of mine, perusing just the other day at a major retailer – you might have done a double-take at my title and picture. Yep. Harvest and Christmas décor – ready for the purchasing. In June.
But, before you totally blow it off – because, after all, summer’s barely begun – let’s ponder a moment…
While I certainly don’t advocate purchasing these types of things at full retail – odd time of year or not – it did get me thinking. What if you are in the market to spruce up your tired Christmas look? Or need to replace strings of lights that don’t work anymore? Now is actually a perfect time. No… I’ve not gone crazy – because, remember, I’m not advocating buying at retail price at a regular retailer.
What I am thinking is actually smart, and can save you a lot of money versus waiting until fall: shopping second hand or yard sales right now for these things. This time of year people are getting rid of their excess holiday items – and not all of it is junk. With the yard sale season in full swing, you’ll find a lot of décor and holiday items both at yards sales, and at second-hand stores, when people donate their items that didn’t sell. And the pickings are a-plenty. Why wait until the fall when second-hand places are completely combed over and all that’s left is a few sad pieces? You’ll be stuck shopping regular retail stores, and paying a lot more for the same items.
I also thought about this…
My friend that took the pictures did mention that some people do holiday crafts, and might need these things. I can see that. If you’re someone who makes holiday crafts, you work on them all year round to have stock for the holiday craft fairs and for gifts. So that gave me a good idea…
Throughout summer we have times that we’re a little stir-crazy. Especially if you have kids that are used to being busier during the school year. Why not mine Pinterest for holiday-themed craft and gift ideas – then hit yard sales and second-hand stores for the supplies? You’ll have something fun to do, that has a purpose, and save money in the process! Someone hand me the snowflake ribbon…
