Optimizing Your Wellness in 2021
Over the last few weeks, I’ve talked a lot about ways to improve your physical and mental health. Let’s pull all of this together, come full circle, and apply a few different tactics to really rededicate ourselves to wellness this year.
Take Stock of Your Health
Have you seen the doctor lately? Due for a physical? There are many of us that haven’t had our annual physical in years. That’s crazy! I know how busy life gets and how hectic 2020 has been, but it’s important to re-prioritize your health.
Find ways to improve your health, even if it’s only a bit at a time. What you do for your body now impacts your body five, then, and twenty years from now. Don’t put a pause on your medical wellness because time waits for no one. Ditch the convenient fast food lifestyle, cut out soda and excess candy, and see your doctor! Put effort into improving your body, your exercise (even if it’s just taking a walk every other day), and the fuel you put in the tank. Remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Very few of us drink enough pure water in a day, so make an effort to do that. Your body will naturally start to detox all the junk sitting in your gut if you start making holistic, wellness-focused decisions about your health. Future you, and your doctor, will thank you for it.
Do a Mental Health Check
My wife, Jenny, and I talked about this recently. Do a mental health check-up on yourself. How are you holding up? Do you need a break? (Maybe take a staycation, like I talked about in last week’s article.) Take an honest look at your mental-scape right now and consider where you can make improvements. Self-awareness is key here.
See a licensed therapist for help with the in-depth work and make a conscious effort each day to be mindful and up-to-date on how you’re doing emotionally. Make time for the things you enjoy and don’t be a workaholic. I know, easier said than done, but burnout is a real thing. Make these efforts in tandem with your physical health improvements. Your mind and body will start to heal together, which will motivate you to keep making progress.
Live Through Experiences
With the pandemic, it’s been hard to get out there and do things like we used to. But, we aren’t completely confined to our homes.
Find ways to get out there and live through experiences again. Go to the beach, a national park, or a nature reserve. Go fishing, hiking, or swimming; take time to get outdoors and reconnect with the spice of life. Yes, options are slimmer than we’d all like them to be right now, but we can still live adventurously. Even just ordering a new type of food to try via delivery is experiencing something new. Take small steps — new experiences enrich our lives and rejuvenate us when we need a break from the routine.
This is a huge part of wellness and progress in our day-to-day lives. Try something new and perhaps you’ll find a new-found passion or part of yourself you had yet to discover.
