It's reported that 1.6 million Americans were victims of smartphone-related crimes in 2012. 40% of robberies in major cities involve smartphones. This is the catalyst behind a bill introduced in Congress that would require a “kill switch” on new phones.
A “kill switch” allows owners to remotely erase data on stolen or lost devices and render them inoperable. It is believed that this would deter smartphone theft. There is some debate, however, whether or not this could also create some security issues.
