How Students Can Save on their College Tuition in 2021
With so much having changed in the past year, it’s no wonder that many students have had to alter or reconsider their college plans. Some have considered taking half-time semesters, have had to go fully virtual, or even considered taking a gap year during COVID-19. No matter what choices students have had to make, one thing that hasn’t changed is that college is expensive. Some schools have even slipped in higher fees and tuition for virtual courses since many universities have pivoted to online learning. With these costs to keep in mind, here are a few ways students can save a little (or a lot) on their college expenses.
Scholarships!
You’ve probably heard this one a lot, and there’s a reason for that. Scholarships, for the student at least, are essentially free money towards their tuition. All it costs is the time it takes to apply. Apply for as many as you can possibly muster, and seek out new scholarships often.
There are new scholarships posted every day, especially through various university resources and databases where these applications and opportunities are posted. There’s a scholarship out there for anything (well, almost anything). Are you a redhead? There’s a scholarship for that. Left handed? Yup. If you’re willing to make your prom outfit out of duct tape, there’s a contest and scholarship for that, too. (Seriously.)
In any case, there’s no shortage of scholarships. Apply, and apply often. Spend time each day as you’re getting ready for your next semester to apply to various scholarships. Also, remember a little goes a long way; you don’t need to win a $10,000 scholarship to get what you need. Scholarships come in all shapes and sizes, financially speaking. Applying for lots of smaller scholarships can go just as far, as they’re more readily awarded and a bit less competitive than the doorbuster scholarships everyone guns for. If you’re looking to save as much as you can on tuition and school expenses, be flexible and open minded, and be willing to spend the time to apply to all kinds of scholarship opportunities.
See if You’re Eligible for Grants
Grants can be just as helpful as scholarships, and you don’t have to apply for these. When you fill out your FAFSA each school year, this form helps the school determine what aid you’re eligible for. This doesn’t just come in the form of loans; if you or your parents make below a certain income threshold, you’re eligible for government grants to help pay for your education.
This is not money you have to pay back; it’s given to you if your circumstances meet the eligibility criteria. Not everyone is eligible, but it’s good to find out and anticipate if grants can help pay for part of (or in some cases, all of) your tuition.
Consider a Community College for Your Gen Ed Requirements
If you’re on the fence about where to go, or you’re about to embark on your first year of college, consider attending a community college for your first two years. Earning an associate’s degree this way and then transferring to a university later can save you literally thousands in tuition.
Community colleges offer the same exact accredited courses for as low as a third of the cost that universities do. Some of these colleges, if they’re close to state universities (which they also may be partnered with for direct-connect programs) may even have the same professors teaching the same courses and curriculum at both colleges. The only difference is the school where you earned those credits and the cost.
Do your research and see if this is an option for you. It’s not necessarily the path for everyone, but it is certainly a cost effective one.
Ask for Funds Towards Your Tuition in Lieu of Gifts
About to graduate high school? Have a birthday coming up? Ask any loved ones who might purchase gifts for you to offer those presents in the form of aid towards your tuition. Many students do this as a way to offset some of the costs of college, especially for things outside of tuition itself like lab fees and books.
These types of costs can really stack up, even if you or a scholarship has your tuition covered. Don’t hesitate to ask for gifts towards your tuition and educational expenses; many loved ones would be thrilled at the idea of helping you go to college.

Sustainable Cleaning With Dropps
You know, it’s super easy to spend money you don’t need to without even realizing it. There have been many occasions where I’ve paid way too much for even the most basic essentials. Take laundry and dish detergent, for instance. It may seem like there aren’t a ton of ways to save on these products without sacrificing quality. Well, I’m here to tell you that there is a cheaper, quality alternative that’s also environmentally sustainable.
I’m talking about Dropps. At just 19 to 20 cents per load, you save yourself money and you save the environment. Dropps has created various types of effective, eco-friendly detergent pods that have over ten thousand 5 star reviews online. Their cleaning formulas contain plant-based ingredients and offer personalized cleaning solutions. The best part is that they’re easy to order, especially because you can subscribe and save even more if you use their auto-ship feature. It comes straight to your door through free, carbon-neutral shipping.
Now, I love to rave about savings on this show, but an important thing I always consider when I recommend products to you is quality. Dropps truly is amazing. One of my son’s friends is our neighbor’s son who plays football for his high school JV team. He came over one day after practice about a month ago and his outfit was just covered in those pesky grass stains. Once he changed, my wife and I offered to wash his uniform so his outfit would already be clean when he got home.
Let me tell you, some of these stains were probably months old — very persistent stains. Well, we threw it in the wash with one of our Dropps stain-fighting detergent pods and wow, what a difference. That uniform came out sparkling! The stains were gone and the whole uniform was totally fresh and clean, ready to be worn to his next game.
Dropps has completely changed how I wash my dishes and laundry. They offer products for every need; they offer stain and odor fighting laundry pods, pods designed for sensitive skin, dishwasher pods for your dishes, wool dryer balls designed to sustainably replace disposable dryer sheets, and more!
- Dropps laundry pods are designed for sensitive skin and are safe and gentle for those with skin allergies like eczema or psoriasis.
- They also help prevent skin rashes, redness, and irritation, as well as prevent build up from allergens like dust mites, pollen, mold, and pet dander.
- Their stain and odor focused laundry pods are made with a gentle formula for washing natural fibers & delicate items like intimates, wool, and cashmere, and they allow you to wash expensive dry clean only items at home.
- They keep your fabrics smelling fresh as you use them, and they can remove the toughest stains like mud, dirt, pizza, pasta, coffee, or even chocolate.
- Their dishwasher pods also clean and shine glassware better than the leading brands.
Dropps delivers powerful cleaning from nature, with plant and mineral-based formulas, to your door in low waste cardboard packaging – instead of plastic containers that end up in our oceans and landfills. Sign up for auto-shipments to save big (you can pause, skip, or cancel anytime). Visit Dropps dot com slash SAVINGS ANGEL and use code SAVINGSANGEL for 25 percent off your first order. www.Dropps.com/SAVINGSANGEL

Protecting Yourself and Shopping Safely this Holiday Season
Protecting ourselves as we shop for gifts this holiday season doesn’t only mean wearing masks and social distancing — it also means being aware of the fraud risks that come with such a shopping boom. Check out our tips on keeping your information and your wallet safe during the holidays.
Be Prepared
Know when and where you plan on shopping for your holiday goodies. This is important, not only in regards to shopping during a pandemic, but also in the way of preventing thieves. Just as our society has innovated in the wake of the pandemic to keep things as virtual and contactless as possible, so has crime.
Did you know that there are contactless skimmers, now? Yep, someone with the right technology can simply walk by you and skim your contactless payment methods. There are services and products (like special lined wallets) out there designed to help prevent these types of wireless skimmers from picking up on your chipped debit cards, but you can also implement some inexpensive DIY tactics. For instance, you can wrap your card in tinfoil when it’s sitting in your wallet. It sounds silly, but it’s a real way to prevent contactless skimming.
Always have a shopping plan laid out so you can be extra prepared and alert when it comes to avoiding thieves, fraudulent activity, and more.
Be Vigilant
Pay attention to your surroundings as you shop. Especially with social distancing, it’s easy to spot a suspicious character who might be wandering a little too closely. There’s always a spike in theft around the holidays, so be aware of your surroundings and use common sense.
Also remember to lock your car doors, try not to park too far from the entrance of the store, and try to never shop alone. The buddy system is tried and true! Take along someone you’ve been quarantining with this year — this can help deter holiday thieves, who are often opportunistic and prey on inattentive, solo shoppers.
Remember Social Distancing
As always, remember that we are still going through a pandemic. Part of safe holiday shopping is remembering to social distance and wear a mask when you go shopping, especially if you take someone along with you.
Take along hand sanitizer and abide by store policies. Also, pay attention to store hours — many are offering altered hours to allow for less busy holiday shopping (including late-night hours). Make sure if you go shopping during these altered hours (particularly late at night), you follow some of our above tips and practice safe, common sense tactics to keep yourself safe.
Shop Online (Safely) When You Can
Don’t forget, 2020 is the year of online shopping. Try to shop online when and where you can. You can even score savings this way; you can easily compare prices between online stores and implement savings apps and extensions to save even more.
If you shop online, make sure to only shop on reputable websites with payment encryptions and money-back guarantees. Holiday theft and fraud can happen online, too, so it’s important that you stay just as vigilant online as you do in stores.

Transcription of Today's Episode
Well, Hi, I'm Josh Elledge, the chief executive Angel at savingsangel.com and welcome to the Savings Angels show. I'm podcasting to you a few days before Thanksgiving here in Orlando, Florida. Now I'm an extremely busy consumer expert, money-saving advocate, syndicated newspaper columnist., and over at my other company, Up My Influence, I work with small and medium-sized business owners, and I help them get lots and lots of sales by using podcasting. I'm a huge fan of speaking to you right now doing what I do. And I love what I do. I can't wait to get going on today's episode. So in order to help you save more, earn more, and live more abundantly in today's show, I'm going to be covering how students can save on their college tuition in 2021. Yes, I have college student number two getting ready for his big college debut. We're also going to be talking about how to do your laundry sustainably — a little bit less harsh on the chemicals, just some different options that you can do. And then we're going to talk about protecting yourself and how to shop safely this holiday season. I'm the Savings Angel looking out for you. So all of that and more. So let's get going.
With so much having changed in this year, it's no wonder that many students have had to alter or reconsider their college plans – college is different right now. Now, some have considered taking halftime semesters, some have had to go fully virtual or even considered taking a gap year during COVID-19. No matter what choices students have had to make, one thing that hasn't changed is that college is still expensive. It is now not saying that it's not a good investment guy. I believe it is. But it does still require a lot of money to go to college. So some schools have even – Hmm, and this I'm the Savings Angel, I don't not like this – they've slipped in higher fees and tuition for virtual courses. Since many universities have pivoted to online learning, you would think that that would reduce the cost right. Now with these costs to keep in mind here are a few ways that students can save a little or even a lot with their college expenses. Number one, scholarships. Now you've heard this a lot, and there's a reason for it. Scholarships for the student, at least, are essentially free money toward their tuition. All it costs is the time it takes to apply. Apply for as many as you possibly can muster, treat it like a part-time job, and seek out new scholarships. Often, there are new scholarships posted every day, especially through various University resources and databases, where these applications or opportunities are posted. There's a scholarship out there for anything. Well, almost anything. Are you a redhead? Guess what, there's a scholarship for that. Left handed? Yeah, there is a scholarship for that. If you are willing to make your prom outfit out of duct tape, there's a contest and scholarship for that too. I'm serious. In any case, there's no shortage of scholarships – apply and apply often. Again, students treat it like a part-time job, you will generally if you got you know some good material to work with, you're generally going to do pretty well. It's just a numbers game, spend time each day as you're getting ready for your next semester to apply to various scholarships. Also, remember, a little goes a long way, you don't need to win a $10,000 scholarship to get what you need. Scholarships come in all shapes and sizes. financially speaking, I have talked to scholarship experts. And their recommendation is to try to find those little $300 ones, $500 ones, the little ones because fewer people apply for them and many of them go unawarded. So, you know again, as you start writing essays, you're going to find that you're going to be able to repurpose a lot of what you put into these essays into the different various applications. Now applying for lots of smaller scholarships, really that's my strategy. That's what I recommend. It's going to feel not as exciting because it's only $300 but again, your chance of getting that — again, my understanding is – I've talked with enough people about this is much greater, oay, far less competitive. You know, again, everyone guns for those doorbuster scholarships. Now, if you're looking to save as much as you can on tuition and school expenses, be flexible, be open-minded and be willing to spend the time to apply to all kinds of scholarship opportunities. I feel like Matthew Lesko.
I don't know if I am dating myself here, but he's the guy — I actually met him a year or two ago. And he's the guy we're like a green suit with question marks all over it, he looks like the Joker, they had him back in like the 80s and 90s. He was about getting free money from the government. But that's exactly what scholarships are like, okay, speaking of free money from the government grants can be just as helpful as scholarships. And you don't have to apply for these, when you fill out your FAFSA, each school year, this form helps the school determine what aid you're eligible for. This doesn't just come in the form of loans, if you or your parents make the lowest certain income threshold students, you're eligible for government grants to help pay for your education. Now, this is not money necessarily, you have to pay back, it's – it's given to you if your circumstances meet the eligibility criteria, not everyone is eligible. But it's good to find out and anticipate if grants can help pay for part of or in some cases, all of your tuition I had, I remember I had a friend in high school who came from a very, very poor situation. And she ended up being hurt, college was completely covered. Because she really just took advantage of every opportunity and use her need-based situation and she got to go to college for free. And, and you know, it's a beautiful thing, but she was the first in her family to also be able to go to college. So you know, we're talking about changing the trajectory of your posterity here. If you're able to take advantage of these programs, if you would not otherwise, if not having these programs would otherwise keep you from going to college. Now, if you're on the fence about where to go, or you're about to embark on your first year of college, consider attending a community college for the first two years. I am a huge fan of this hate for your G E's. Are you kidding? I – listen, some people would argue against this, as your Savings Angel friend, go to a community college please, earn an associate's degree this way, and then transferring to university later can save you literally thousands of dollars in tuition. Community colleges offer the exact same accredited courses for as low as a third of the cost that universities other universities do. Now, some of these colleges, if they're close to state universities, which they also may be partnered with for Direct Connect programs may even have these same professors teaching the same courses and curriculum at both colleges. The only difference is the school where you earn those credits and the cost. Do your research and see if this is an option for you. It's not necessarily the path for everyone, but it is certainly a cost-effective one. Finally, you can ask for funds toward your tuition in lieu of gifts. If you're about to graduate high school, you got a birthday coming up, ask any loved ones who might purchase gifts for you to offer those presents in the form of aid toward your tuition. Many students do this as a way to offset some of the costs of college, especially for things outside of tuition itself, like lab fees and books. These types of costs can really stack up, my son who's in his senior year of high school right now has a pressure washing business. And he uses that as part of you know, when he communicates with his potential customers. He goes, he lets them know exactly what he's saving up for. He's saving up for college. And so you know, and as a result of that, his customers really appreciate that. And he's gotten a lot of business. He's just, you know, very transparent and authentic with his customers. And it's really worked out well for him. I'm very, very proud of him.
So don't hesitate. Back on the gift thing, right? I just got a little and maybe even like I said, if you've got a high schooler that has a little side hustle, or you know, some sort of side business. Don't be afraid to communicate that to people love to support ambitious young folks that are making plans for the future. But on the gift side, don't hesitate to ask for gifts toward tuition and educational expenses. Parents, adults were sympathetic and many loved ones would be thrilled at the idea of helping you go to college. Listen, students. I'm very, very proud of you.
Moms and dads, I'm very, very proud of you for getting ready to launch a child into the college world. And so if you want some more help, you could just search, savingsangel.com lots of savings and search for the words scholarship, tuition, college, we have dozens of articles on different ways that you can save money, apply for scholarships, all the best websites to use to find those scholarships. We have some experts that I've interviewed previously that I've got links to their site and, and they'll help you out as well. But again, that's all at savings. angel.com. And again, just search for the word college, tuition scholarship, that sort of thing. We got a big search box right on the website, going to help you save some money and get those kids in college.
You know, it's super easy to spend money, you don't need to without even realizing it. I am a big fan of helping my Savings Angel friends save money on the easy stuff, right? This stuff? Like honestly, do you really want to invest your money in higher profits for manufacturers and retailers? Oh, hey, there have been occasions I will admit where I've paid way too much for even the most basic essentials. And when I find out I might go 'cause I'm not a fan of that. Okay, take, for example, laundry and dish detergent, for example. Now, it may not seem like there are a ton of ways to save on these products without sacrificing quality.
I know Mrs. Savings Angel is not a big fan of some of the cheapy. Uh, you know, the crappy, I'm sorry, that's not a good word, kids. But the just the bad stuff for the laundry, it's, you know, leave spots, blah, blah, blah, doesn't clean?
Well, listen, I've been doing a lot of research on this, I'm kind of a laundry geek, there is a cheaper quality, alternative. And it's also environmentally sustainable. We don't have to use as harsh chemicals as we used to. And that company on the internet, it's dropps. It's D R O P P S. And the website, I'm going to give you a coupon code here in just a little bit. It's dropps.com/savingsangel, and just spoiler alert, you get 25% off your first order, which really makes it inexpensive. Now, normally, even without those savings that I just gave you, it's 19 to 20 cents per load. And you can save yourself money. And you also get to save the environment drops has created various types of effective eco friendly detergent pods that have over 10,000 5 star reviews online, including my own. Their cleaning formula, it's plant-based ingredients, and you know, and they offer personalized cleaning solutions that all use something that's just much more eco friendly, it's much better for the environment, you don't have those harsh chemicals that your kids are wearing and breathing, that sort of thing. And, and of course, you know, again, it's an internet-based company, super easy to order. You just Subscribe and Save and you use the auto-ship and they give you savings for that, come straight to your door through free carbon-neutral shipping. Now again, you know I love to read about savings on this show. But an important thing I always consider is quality. And I wouldn't recommend a bad product. I use dropps. We have been using dropps. We used them a lot last year. We've been using them a lot this year. It's just a great product, right? One of my son's friends is a neighbor's son. I remember when they were playing football and he came over after practice and it's just grass stains. They're the worst. And he got changed. My wife and I, we threw all the uniforms into the washer, they went out to the pool. Sure enough, the stains are gone. And again, dropps, it's a great product. It really really works. So now they've completely changed how we not only do laundry but dishes as well. They offer products for every need the offer stain and odor-fighting laundry pods like you can personalize exactly what you need the most. They have formula for sensitive skin. They've got dishwasher pods for the dishes, I always use the wool dryer balls. They're designed to sustainably replace disposable dryer sheets, which I'm my I remember my mom was always really allergic to dryer sheets. dryer sheets are just again, I know everyone's different. It's a little harsh when you're just using a big wool ball that you throw in there, which you can get through drops as well. It's cool, it does the job and doesn't you know you're not like breathing, dryer sheet scent all night long on your sheets, drops laundry pods there, they've got sensitive skin. If you've got eczema, psoriasis, any kind of skin allergies, that's probably going to be a good option for you. Because you're using, yes, less chemicals. This might also be a good solution. Like if you get skin rashes, redness or irritation. Like I said, I know that affects my mom with with that and I know other people, you're also — it's a great product. So it's going to cut down on dust mites, pollen, mold, pet dander, all that stuff. The stain and odor focus pods. Like I said, there's lots of different ones you can use. They're made with a gentle formula for washing natural fibers and delicate items like wool-cashmere. And they also allow you to even wash expensive dry clean only items at home. So again, that's going to save you some money. And even though again, they are not using these harsh chemicals, they do they still smell fresh, but it's more of a kind of a natural, fresh as opposed to like a chemically fresh and they will absolutely remove the toughest stains. I would contact their customer support if you run into a situation where it's not working. And I will also tell you that I am — oh and Mrs. Savings Angel and I — dishwasher. I am so picky about spotty glassware and stuff and these do a fantastic job their dishwasher pods. Alright, so again, powerful cleaning from nature, plant and mineral-based formulas to your door low waste cardboard packaging, no plastic containers to fill up landfills with in our oceans. Protecting ourselves as we shop for gifts this holiday season doesn't only mean wearing masks and social distancing, although that's pretty important. It also means being aware of the fraud risks that come with such a shopping boom. Check out our tips on keeping your information and your wallet safe during the holidays. You ready? I got four big tips. Number one, be prepared. know when and where you plan on shopping for your holiday goodies. This is important, not only in regards to shopping during a pandemic, but also in the way of preventing thieves.
Seriously, anyone who's going to snatch someone's purse, oh man, someone stole my mom's phone out of her purse one time, and thankfully I wasn't there or I would have — I would have become super Savings Angel.
And I think I would have flown down and tracked that thief down. I'm not a fan of that. But unfortunately, it happens. So just as our society is innovated in the wake of the pandemic to keep things as virtual and contactless as possible, so has crime. Did you know that there are contactless skimmers? Yeah, someone with the right technology can simply walk by you and skim your contactless payment methods. There are services and products like specially lined wallets out there to help prevent these types of wireless scammers from picking up your chip debit cards. Isn't this ridiculous? All right, but you also can implement some inexpensive DIY tactics. Test this out. All right, for instance, you can wrap your card in tin foil, you don't need to make a hat out of it. But if you do that, it sounds silly, but it actually will prevent contactless skimming, you could search the YouTube and you can find demos of this where they've shown this. So again, yeah, keep the tin foil off your head, but wrap it around your wallet or your cards. Always have a shopping plan laid out so you can be extra prepared and alert when it comes to avoiding thieves fraudulent activity and more. I know shopping is fun, but maybe you could find some entertainment and other things as opposed to kind of strolling up and down aisles looking for inspiration. Do your research at home.
Try and just be more diligent and focused I'd say when you're shopping. And that gets me to number two.
Be vigilant, pay attention to your surroundings as you shop, especially with social distancing, it's easy to spot a suspicious character who might be wondering a little too closely. Keep your distance buddy. There's always a spike in theft around the holidays. So be aware of your surroundings. And please use common sense. Also, remember to always lock your car doors. Try not to park too far from the entrance of the store and try to never shop alone. the buddy system, it's tried and true. Take along someone you've been quarantining with this year. And this can help you deter holiday thieves who are often opportunistic and prey on inattentive solo shoppers. Number three, remember social distancing, as always, remember that we're still going through a pandemic, I am so hopeful for the future. I really, really am. I'm excited. I'm hopeful. And it's because of people it's because of everyone doing their part. everyone working together. I know it's exhausting. And I know some people are like done with it, I feel you. But I'm just I'm grateful to you for every sacrifice that you've made this year. For any sacrifices you'll have to make in 2021. And part of safe holiday shopping is remembering to social distance and wear a mask when you go shopping, especially if you take someone along with you take along hand sanitizer and abide by store policies also pay attention to store hours, many are offering altered hours to allow for less busy holiday shopping, including late night hours. For you night owls. Make sure if you go shopping during these altered hours particularly late at night, you follow some of the previously mentioned tips and practice safe common sense tactics to keep yourself safe. Finally, shop online safely when you can. 2020 is the year of online shopping, try to shop online when and where you can. You can even score savings This way you can easily compare prices between online stores and implement savings apps and extensions to save even more. I'm a huge fan of doing as much of your planning shopping online, where you can see all of your options in great clarity as opposed to being in a rush situation, or in an impulsive situation. In a store or shopping online, you just generally spend less money. Now if and when you shop online, make sure to only shop on reputable websites with payment encryptions and money-back guarantees to prevent holiday theft and fraud. It can happen online too. So it's important that you stay just as vigilant online as you do in stores. And doing all that my friends, is part of living abundantly.
